Chekhov as a video game? Yes, it is here. The US-based Arlekin Players Theater premieres chekhovOS / an experimental game /, an interactive online play based on Anton Chekhov The Cherry Orchard.

chekovOS allows viewers to take a peek at the operating system behind Chekhov’s computer and the world his characters live in, in search of happiness. Viewers can interact with the suspended actors in a virtual setting designed by the ArtsEmerson studio.

Directed by Russian-born Igor Golyak, the project includes a special appearance by Russian-American dancer and choreographer of Latvian origin Mikhail Baryshnikov, who himself plays Chekhov. Other cast members include Tony-nominated actor Jessica Hecht as Ranveskaya, landowner of the cherry orchard, and Darya Denisova as Natasha Prozorov.

“Post-pandemic theater must re-examine and reinvent itself,” Golyak explains. I find myself in constant dialogue with The Cherry Orchard. During a time of loss and recovery, it helps us explore connection, transition, loss, and human aspiration for happiness.

chekhovOS / an experimental game / will be shown on the new platform zerogravity.art, a virtual theater lab developed by Arlekin Players Theater in partnership with ArtsEmerson.

The online performances will take place between May and July. Find out more and buy your tickets here.
