Citizens Theater: play starring Jonathan Watson and Maureen Carr to premiere virtually next month
THE Citizens Theater will bring the stage to Glasgow homes, as they plan to screen an online filmed production starring Jonathan Watson of Only An Excuse and Maureen Carr of Still Game.
Fibers, initially premiered on the Citizen Stage in 2019, will be featured in a special filmed version, with both actors reprising their roles.
The play, written by award-winning playwright Frances Poet, tells the story of Beanie and her husband Jack, a former Clyde shipyard worker, as they battle mesothelioma and is a witty but heartbreaking look. on the impact of asbestos on workers and their families.
Director Jemima Levick said: âAs with so many theater projects, the COVID-19 pandemic has precluded our planned UK tour of Fibers.
âIt seems like an opportunity for us to approach the play in a new way, mixing the two art forms of theater and film to tell this story with all the humor and heart that the original contained.
“I’m especially happy that audiences across the UK are able to see it, especially those living with mesothelioma who, with lockdown restrictions, might not be able to attend if it was in their local theater.
Jonathan, who plays Jack, said: âI think people use humor to deal with tough times, humor helps them get through that.
âI don’t think it’s exclusive to the west of Scotland, I think it’s a general thing.
“Mesothelioma is extremely common in this region and I believe it has had the highest rate of mesothelioma in the world for quite some time.”
The film, which was created by the theater with funding from the Performing Art Relief Fund, is expected to premiere online next month.
